Guided hike in Silvermine, near TokaiElephant’s Eye
Elephant’s Eye is a popular, fairly easy hike in the Silvermine section of Table Mountain National Park, near Tokai. The trail leads up to a large cave opening in a mountain that, from a distance, looks like an elephant lying down, which is where the name comes from.
Local folklore says the San people once used the cave as a lookout.

The hike is about 5 to 7 km return depending on the route, and usually takes 2 to 3 hours. It is easy to moderate, with a steady incline but no technical sections. The path winds through fynbos-covered slopes, pine forest and open ridges before reaching the cave. From inside or just in front of it, you get wide views over False Bay, Muizenberg and the surrounding mountains. It is especially popular for sunset hikes because of the glowing coastal views.
The cave itself is a natural formation carved into the sandstone over thousands of years. The surrounding land was once used for forestry and later became part of Table Mountain National Park. Today it is a favourite local hike because it is accessible, not too strenuous, and rewards you with a big view without a long or technical climb.
